Ethereum Name Service is a public and open decentralised identity protocol and infrastructure provider which is designed as a DAO, running on the Ethereum blockchain. Using the service, which, however, is not a regular domain system with corresponding features, users can register URL addresses as their desired domain ending in “.eth”. All ENS lookups are started by querying the ENS registry, which is the core contract. The registry maintains a list of domains, owner records, resolver and time to live, and domain owners can make changes to their data. The names registered in ENS are non-fungible tokens (NFTs) that follow the ERC721 standard and the transfer of .eth records can be performed in a way similar to other NFTs. Holders of ENS, the network’s native token, can vote on governance matters, certain protocol parameters and the use of funds as part of treasury management.
